UG2 Webinar – World Ocean Database
January 30 @ 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Please join us for the first UG2 webinar of 2025: World Ocean Database Seminar!
Alexey Mishonov (Associate Research Scientist University of Maryland – Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and NOAA – National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI)), will be presenting a seminar on The World Ocean Database (WOD) and running through some practical examples with the audience.
WOD is the world’s largest collection of uniformly formatted, quality controlled, publicly available ocean profile data. It is a powerful tool for oceanographic, climatic, and environmental research, and the end result of more than 20 years of coordinated efforts to incorporate data from institutions, agencies, individual researchers, and data recovery initiatives into a single database. WOD data spans from Captain Cook’s 1772 voyage to the contemporary Argo/Gliders period, making it a valuable resource for long term and historical ocean climate analysis. In this communication, the most recent release of WOD23 will be introduced and increase the glider data holding demonstrated with comparison to our previous presentation at the UG2 workshop in 2022. Some aspects of the data extraction techniques will be demonstrated.
